    The Returning.
She had been standing there since 3 o’clock. The 153 was not due in till 4.30 that afternoon. It was the only passenger train to come through this northern Victorian town. All of the others were wheat or goods trains that didn’t stop. The station master had tried to get her to sit in the waiting room out of the hot sun but she just waved him away. She had been waiting for this day for four years. He went away when he was 18 years old. He looked so handsome in his uniform – it made her heart flutter as he boarded the train that was to take him to war.
He was from a well to do generations’ old farming family and she the daughter of the General Store owner. They had been school heart sweethearts since grade six. Everybody in town new they would always end up together.
When he left she was but a girl of 17 and she promised him she would wait for him. She was no longer the naive school girl but now a woman ready to give herself to him completely and openly. She had put on her most summery dress revealing her shoulders and was feeling very special as the train pulled into the station. She had stood at the front of the platform so she could see immediately which carriage he alighted from. She didn’t expect so much steam and it was blocking her view of the carriages. The noise and heat around her took her breath away – or was it the heightened anticipation of when she would see him.
He had written to his mother from the hospital to let her know the seriousness of his injuries. He asked his mother not to tell her of the date he would be home. He didn’t want his childhood sweetheart to greet him at the station or to see him disfigured like this as he felt he was no longer a complete man and could never be the man she wanted. They had written to each other so many times over the last years declaring their love for each other and made plans for their future life together. He now could no longer fulfill his side of this and he didn’t want to return at all. The towns’ people would see what the war had done to his body, but they wouldn’t know for years what it had done to his mind.
But his mother had let her know the day of the returning and advised her not to expect too much. She didn’t know what that meant. But she was here now. Ready and waiting. The train has come to a stop now. She cannot see through the steam. She stands on her tip toes and clasps the side of her frock. A gap in the steam. There he is……………
