Recently a painter-friend said to me, “Ted, I can’t look at your work any more because I can’t tell what’s real.”
There is an expectation of photo-based fine artists that we stay within the lines. That we produce only organic stuff without any ‘unnatural’ ingredients. Somehow, they think, our ability to create vibrating fiction is, well, wrong. “If God had intended those birds to sit on that rock… S/He’d have put them suckers there…”
Your work is salt in their eyes. It directs the enormous ‘realistic’ acceptance of photographic images in ways that no other art form can. Today photographers have been liberated from the tyranny of plagiarizing the moment. And here you prove it beyond words by leaving me certain that I can’t tell what’s real.
