With a painted smile, she showed me a dream,
of bright lights and romance in the dark,
surrounded by grit and stubborn shadows,
for a while, I forgot my my world,
while she cried for her’s.
A shot showing the reality sometimes of glamour and society, that the selling of the dream, nearly always lies with the waking of reality, yet for a few pounds a dream, an illusion, a freedom of desire, lust, can be always found waiting with an open door.
Taken in the heart of Manchester.
Converted in to black and white and best viewed large.
Shot on an Olympus E30.

Fantastic captue. Looks soooo right in B&W…
LOL it was typical summer Manchester weather, dull, grey and rain in the air, just had to be in b/w, not sure what the guy was repairing though lol. Thanks Don

G’day C’n’H!
Not gritty, grungy or sleezy but a real slice of the reailty of life in a big city.
Your expert photography and B&W processing have depicted this backstreet scene so clearly and by the attitude of the human figure has left the image open to the viewer’s imagination.
The perspective down the alleyway and the perspective distortion making the walls lean inward gives the image a very voyeuristic feel.
I get the feeling I have just come across this little scene and stopped so I did not disturb whatever it is the person is doing.

Thank you Dennis for another great comment, this lies behind a block that is fresh faced and modern to the world, yet the old leaning buildings seem to survive in it’s shadow. Like you, I saw, took the shot and then wandered on

Wondering what that person is doing there, is he crapping his things together which he dropped by accidant or did he see something edible on the ground or just tie his shoelaces, who knows?
Really a great b/w shot out of daily life for some people!
Thank you Els, it looked like a poster panel he was working on, but such is the perspective, it opens so many stories

Perhaps he is coming to grips with the realization that his loneliness cannot be abated within the Tropical Palms…or maybe he’s about to throw up from too many shots and beers…! Either way this is a very evocative and brilliant shot Richard!!
or he is reworking the illusion for others in his repairs or, lol he has nothing to do with the place at all.. I guess that is why i loved this moment, it was so full of stories :) Thank you Dar
