From such lines, songs were born by

Cut through rock and mud,
dug from stone and ore,
forged in hell’s kitchens,
hammered home one swing at a time,
a vein of industry across this land.

As you leave Garsdale Head in the North Yorkshire dales, you stumble briefly into Cumbria, but along this shared valley edge, runs the famous Carlisle to Settle section of railway.
Taken looking back towards Garsdale, the storm clouds sit on the fell in the distance.

Converted into black and white and best viewed large.

Definitely no way for electric railway in this place, all this unemployed steam would make the government fall, for sure… Gorgious and impressive !

  • It is the views and romance of this place that actually saved this line from closure a few years ago. Hand dug too, these travelling families would have made your archaeological heart proud :) Thanks Helene
