Artist's Description

Old Norse tales of hell,
made real in this city of the Viking,
Roman roots of burning hell,
rebuilt over preachers rants,
Dante’s tales of journeys enlightenment,
Modern humanity linked in this living past.
Looking down Micklegate in the city of York at the junction of Priory Street, in the middle of a snow storm.
The poem links the city’s Viking and Roman past to the large amount of churches in York and how hell went from being a place of ice and cold to the fires of a rubbish tip on the outskirts of Naples, being turned in the vision of hell most know today and the vision of the many circles of hell found in Dante’s famous poem. The clue to this picture is the name of the shop just seen through the snow ;)
Converted into black and white and best viewed large.
