On my recent holiday, I saw these three women begging on the steps of St Michel & St Gudula, the Catholic Cathedral in Brussels. It was a cool day with a little bit of a breeze as you can see from their wind-blown skirts and their clothing in general.

(The cathedral wasn’t far from my hotel. More information on the cathedral can be found here.)

Hand-held Pentax K100D with a Sigma 28 – 80 mm lens.
1/90th second exposure;
f/8.0;
ISO 400; and
50.0 mm focal length.

A very slight Curves adjustment, then a small crop followed by an enlargement for posting. I actually managed to shoot this level and almost blur-free without a tripod!

Thanks for looking, all comments are much appreciated.

    Nice job of cropping Jan, leaving enough space to show the scope of the building… and I like how straight you got the verticals, especially noticeable on the right.
    The colors of the clothing stand out nicely against the narrow tonal range of the cathedral, and your shooting angle was well chosen.
    Nice work, and cool to see another souvenir of your Brussels adventure!

  • I surprised myself by how straight I got it! I cropped it at the bottom and a little on the right because that edge of the photo actually looked cockeyed but, every other vertical was straight acording to Photoshop’s Single Marquee Column tool. They are bright, aren’t they! Again, I was trying to be inconspicuous, and I think I succeeded, although other people were making no effort to not disturb them – they weren’t contributing to their collection, though.
    Lol, it was an adventure, more than I’d expected but worth every minute of it. I’m sort of hoping that I can come back in about three years and see more of the abbey . . . without so much of the restoration equipment and material being visible. And a bit more of Brussels, too. Would you believe, I’m still shoeless? :-(

    Great viewing and beautifully presented

  • It’s a beautiful cathedral, Chris, and I was lucky that it was only a few minutes walk from the hotel I was staying in. I couldn’t get lost going to or returning from there! I did get lost elsewhere in Bruseels, though, lol. I appreciate your lovely comment.
