A great grey heron (Ardea cinerea cinerea) flying over a marshland at sunrise, in the middle of the sand dune desert near Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
About a dozen of these huge birds spent the summer at the marsh and they are now being joined by others migrating in for the winter. About 10 species of herons and egrets spend the winter at the marsh which is teeming with small fish.

Wonderful feather details for an in-flight image David, very well photographed and presented,
Regards, Rod.
Hi Rod — thanks very much for the fine compliment – these guys are fairly shy so it takes a little stalking to get close – dave
