A male canary carpenter bee (Xylocopa aestuans) on the flower of the Sodom’s apple plant (Calotropis procera) in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. The large bee is a native to the desert areas and nests in hollowed out woody branches (I have one living in one of my wooden windchimes!). The female is more commonly seen and has a yellow head and black body – a much more common type is the full black carpenter bee. -Sodom’s apple is a member of the milkweed family, mentioned in the Talmud and other ancient texts. It grows in the deep dune areas where hardly anything else lives and blooms in the heat of the summer, providing much needed food and shelter for a large variety of insects and insects eaters like geckos and lizards and birds.
Such exquisite detail in this image David – especially so on larger view. I love it! Would love to know what lens you used for this if you don’t mind sharing :)
Hi Renee – thanks very much for the comment and the fav – I used my canon 100mm macro lens for this one – I normally would use my 100-400mm lens – but this guy was very agreeable to letting me get close – I think the flowers must have been at peak feeding as there must have been a dozen different insects on the bush – cheers – dave
