On and early morning walk in the vast sand dunes of the empty quarter, outside the city of Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), I came upon a common kestrel which had just taken down a collared dove – an bird almost it’s own size. Kestrels moslty seem to go after insects and small reptiles — this one must have been quite hungry and fast. It let me get close enough to get the photo (by crawling through the sand – not great for the camera) and then leave so it could enjoy it’s well deserved meal. The kestrels live and nest in the Jabel Hafit mountain area (UAE). Canon 40D with 100-400mm lens.

Hi Patjila – thank you – I really do like to watch birds of prey they have such a way about them – powerful and sure of themselves — this guy was none to happy with me — but I let him alone to finish his meal — I see that you also like the kestrel – cheers – dave
