A laughing dove in mid-coo, wild bird at the Al Ain Zoo, UAE. The dove (also know as a palm dove) inflates its throat to produce the familiar mournful sound. Side photo shows the same bird in a non-cooing position. For a bird close-up challenge.
Ooooooh my goodness what a brilliant close up. Excellent detail.
thank you Lyn — these are such gentle birds – but first time I had ever really watched them in mid-coo — dave

Hi Luda — thanks — the patterns only show when they inflate their necks — dave
Wow, this shot is really gorgeous, my friend!
thanks Bela – at least it isn’t another dune — dave
Excellent presentation of this beautiful Palm Dove David. I once had one which I found while still a nestling, under a high eucalyptus tree in Libya. I bought some wheat which I soaked in water overnight, and I used to mouth-feed her this wheat four times a day, and kept her in a shoe-box in my room. After three weeks I had to go on field-break back to Malta and as she was still too young to fly, I decided to take ’Kizzy" back home with me. She grew so tame and attached to me and my wife, that she used to spend hours sitting on our shoulders and liked the occasional grains of wheat from our lips. We used to keep her in an open bird-cage which she only used to sleep in. She never flew away and was afraid to go outdoors. Whenever she saw me she used to fly straight to my shoulder and make this cooing sound. Kizzy enjoyed 7 good years with us which was more than twice her life expectancy in the wild!
Hi Anthony – I will never look at these doves the same way again — thanks again for the wonderful story — just makes me smile imagining her sitting on your shoulder cooing — what a great guy — dave
What a beautiful bird….such a lovely delicate colour too…. Love Anthony’s story above – sweet memories!
Anthony’s story is amazing — I knew this were gentle birds but had no idea they could be so domesticated — thanks very much — dave

I must admit that I’ve never heard of this species of dove Dave and it is such an attractive bird, very well captured indeed, the feather detail is superb, good luck in the challenge, it should do very well,Regards, Rod.
thanks again Rod — they are very common here and sometimes it isnt until you see them in a close photo that you realize the detail in the feathers — I will look at them differently now — dave
Gorgeous creature … and such a delicate color … like the soft, loose face-powder that ladies used to wear and apply with a big puff .. years and years ago. Just this wonderful color!!!!! And those amazing markings!!!!
thanks again Lois — how cute — when I was looking at it really close up – it did have sort of a look of way overdone powder makeup – they are really gentle birds — dave
