Styling Hoopoe by

Eurasian Hoopoe – Upupa epops epops – a fairly common resident bird here in the UAE – the long beak is used to dig grubs and other creatures from the ground — have these guys occasionally in my garden they are a real treat — when excited the crest fully inflates. This one is in Safa Park – Dubai.

I can only echo the previous comments Dave, a very attractive bird and a high quality image of it, well done indeed,
    Regards, Rod.

  • thanks again Rod – he let me get fairly close — I think the feeding was good at this spot — I have seen them pull out huge grubs from my garden – dave

Agree with Karon and other David. A fascinating bird and very nice work capturing the image. He looks a bit like what we in Illinois call a Northern Flicker … except our flicker doesn’t have a long beak like that nor the fancy hair doo. The Flicker is in the woodpecker family and I would guess with the intimidating beak your Hoopoe has, he’s probably also in the woodpecker family … maybe a third cousin or so. Nice work!!

  • Hey John – thanks again — they sort of look like a flicker but they are completely ground feeders — fairly common in Asia – we do not have any woodpeckers here at all but you are correct in that they are distantly related. Dave
