FEATURED in Backyard Macro and Closeups

FEATURED in Young Snappers

This is my first time in the garden with my new camera!

I was just having a bit of a browse on RB and got a bit of a twitch to go and find something to take a photo of and this is the result.

I headed down the Garden ( at about 10pm so well and truly dark) and being a bit creative I used the torch (origionally to see where I was going) and a couple of sheets of white paper over the end to paint the light onto the flower from different directions during the 6 second exposure. I did most of the painting with the white paper to diffuse the light however at the end of the exposure changed to pink paper (closest thing to purple) to enhance the colours.

Cannon 500D (RAW)
18 – 55mm IS Kit Lens (35mm)
6 Sec
f 4.5
ISO 100

Minor adjustments in Adobe Lightroom including enhancement of colours and detail in flower and darkening o fht e background.

I really had very little that I had to do to the background. By painting on the light myself the background was hardly visible at all anyway. I just clenaed it up using lightroom’s adjustment brush.

Overall I am very happy with the outcome. Better than I expected so it was a good night’s work in my eye’s :-)

Any comments, advice or criticism would be greatly appreciated

This is a beautiful image, love the strong colour of the flower against the background. Thank you also for adding how you created this image and the use of a torch and paper . helpful to us all to learn new things and to try something different.

  • Thankyou Karen! I appreciate your comments!

Excellent combination of techniques. It is experomentation like this that finds gold. try grease or tracing paper also.

  • When you say grease or tracing paper do you mean on the end of the torch? I understand the tracing paper but the grease? Do you mean smear it over. Sorry if this is dumb, sounds very interesting but am just not quite sure what you mean.
    Cheers, Danny
