Claire – this is very true. However, having spent a deal of time with Vietnamese families, both in Vietnam and also here in Melbourne, may I say that their understandings, beliefs and also appreciation of material items is vastly different from ours. I love the photo, it i moving. It also shows a way of life that the Vietnamese are comfortable with, and one which we have little appreciation for as capitalists!!

I’m a Capitialist and I understand and appreciate the way of life depicted because I am aware and do not ignore the fact that my own fore fathers would have had to do something similar to survive not that long ago. None of us have been just plucked from somewhere and deposited where ever we are now. For most of us and our ancestors life hasn’t been easy, it’s taken a lot of very hard work to survive this far. That’s where the real appreciation should lay :-)

Wonderful image Claire. You have captured him in such a perfect moment. Also you have intuitively framed the photo beautifully. I sense in this pic the little boy is so at peace. Perhaps on some levels his lifestyle is a balanced one. Wonder also if many of us Westerners are more depressed by material ego survival than real survival. ie; That if we really had to survive for our life rather than our reputation that we may feel better about ourselves. Loving your images and also loving that you are writing your emotions along with them.

Beautiful image Claire. It is interesting to read how some of the others view this image. I would have to agree, without knowing the specific situation, this appears to just be part of his normal life, collecting fresh food for himself and his family. It has been like this for generations, it’s just that we no longer do it….maybe fortunately, maybe unfortunately
