Sale, a reasonably large country town of approx., 12,000 people is part of the Gippsland Lakes Water System.
This wetlands was once a portion of a much larger area known as the Sale Common, which was available to towns people for agisting their cattle and horses. The Sale Common State Game Refuge was proclaimed in 1964. It is 308 hectares in size, of which about 70% is fresh water marshs.
