Blitzen
To all who leave comments – sorry that I haven’t responded. Please rest assured that I appreciate every last one of them !:)
Stary sky above but not where the camera is pointed. About 10pm.
Rolleiflex 6006, 50mm Rolligon Lens, f11, Fuji NHG 400 ASA and who knows what the exposure time was.
The main strike was over 30km away and took out the power to the town it was over. In a whole roll of film this was the strike that drained the fierceness out of the storm – you know, its final big bang.
Taken from Yungaburra, Far Nrth Qld – Storm was over Mareeba.
Blitzen belongs to the following groups:
As Is, Kairos - Capturing the Decisive Moment, Light Trails, Lightning and Storms, Masterpiece: Photography, Medium and Large Format Film Photography and SkyscapesAvailable for sale as Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints and Framed Prints

Such a majestic Bolt is rarely captured…And On FILM?!!!...WOW
Rikki Pool, 3 months ago
Insane power in that shot!
Chris Cohen in reply to Michael Bermingham WP’s comment, 3 months ago
” and on film?!!! ”? There were other photographic mediums then (late 90s)? Of course it was on filum! I’ve been playing with digital lately from phd’s to professional but seriously considering resurecting the old Rolleis and using Velvia and buying a serious scanner – bu**er 12 megapixels and no grain! What about tonal gradation? I had afriend who used a Graflex Press Camera (5×4 inch) and he used to say ” the negs were so sharp you could cut your fingers on the image ”. I liked Sid.
Michael Bermi..., 3 months ago
LOL
I didnt know it was the late 90’s!!
Lightning photography with film is always a shot in the dark (pardon the pun) I used to use my archaic CANON AE1 Program to shoot lightning, but you never knew if you had anything good or not.
Cant beat digital (IMHO) i’m afraid…
Chris Cohen in reply to Michael Bermingham WP’s comment, 3 months ago
400 asa = f11 as long as it was really dark – shutter about 30~60 secs. No mystery, works every time (except the times it didn’t of course)
Michael Bermi..., 3 months ago
Ha!
And except when the lightning touches down “Out of frame” and you dont know untill processing…
lisa1970, 3 months ago

WOW! OH YEA, DID I SAY, WOW! I LOVE LIGHTNING SHOTS. OUT HERE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, WE DON’T GET MANY ELECTRICAL STORMS LIKE THAT ONE. I MANAGED TO GET A COUPLE OF GOOD SHOT WAY BACK IN 1988 FROM THE MOUNTAIN TOP OF OUR LOCAL RANGE, ABOUT 2800 FEET ALTITUDE. BUT, THIS SHOT OF YOURS IS FANTASTIC. NICELY DONE. BOB.

Absolutely fantastic, best lighting picture I’ve ever seen. All the side shoots too. Great (brave) capture.
Chris Cohen in reply to Mary Campbell’s comment, 3 months ago
not brave – my wife reckons stupid! – but the very top of the shot is the top of the cloud (as in the description – i had stars above me) and it was a wide angle lens (28mm equivalent).

Chris Cohen in reply to Mark Greenmantle’s comment, 3 months ago
well, thanks – it’s in masterpieces as i don’t think i can top it. i’ve tried in other genres but no! all about being in the right place at the right time. and it was taken from home and as they say, most accidents happen in the home LOL :)

wow…holy-electric-mushrooms batman!
That is stunning!!!
no pun intended ;)
Chris Cohen in reply to Flinders’s comment, about 1 month ago
Ta Flinders. The funniest thing about this photo is it was done on film and I have a large wall print of it. Do you know where it is in our home? In the shed! When we moved my wife told me that it didn’t match the decore/colour scheme. It will be coming inside as I have claimed the computer room and I told her that I’m covering the wall with my favourite photos – some of them portraits of brides and I dont care what she says. So it will hang again.
