Desert pea after rain

The stunning Sturt’s Desert Pea flowering in Melbourne – in a large container. It had just finished raining so you can see drops on flower.

Yep it’s the floral emblem of the State of South Australia. Grows after rain dryer inland areas. It can be grown as a summer annual in cooler parts of Australia – from seed – which you soak overnight before planting.

Thanks gypsygirl – the shocking red contrasted with the dark centres is brilliant isn’t it. Each flower is about 4-5 inches high – the plant runs along the ground.
    Cheers

I would have to say this one of my favourite flowers. I tried hard to get an image when i was in central australia last year but to no avail :(. Beautifully captured and your folio is wonderful Chris! Good luck with finding out what kind of plant the purple people plant is!

My fav Australian plant. I tried to grow one once but failed. I decided to transplant it into the garden once it had grown from a seed and then it died. I should have left it in the pot. Great shot by the way

Hi Sharon – thank you for your generous comments – they were selling these in pots at Treeplanters nursery in Springvale and Kuranga Native nursery in Montrose. You can go them from seed as an annual from late Spring – treat as per wattle seed – pour boiling water over them and leave to soak for a few hours then plant – HOT spot! Cheers. Chris
