Intereting comment on the side as I was reading an interesting article the other day about embodiment and the sense of self and they were discussing a number of disorders related to this sense of disembodiement. I personally went through a period when I was arund 21 where I felt like I had no substance and could see objects through my arms and hands and feet. It was extremely frightening and made me want to commite suicide. When it didnt stop I went to the mental health people where they proceceded to tell me I was going mad!!! Great lot of help there especially after telling them of my experiences with ghosts etc, and wanted to dope me up with drugs. I told the doctor he didnt know shit about me and that their was such a thing as the spiritual world as I had been having to deal with seeing and feeling it all my life, and left to deal with my way of perception and ‘seeing’ in my own way.
I have oftern wonder on the experience in later years as it was so real to me, and it was in this article that I was finally given some information on it and a name: asomatognosia. There are other ‘neglect related phenomena’ as they are called and I find it fascinating that this is how you described this young womans condition. I hope I have broadened the depth of your understanding on such topics, and wish you well in your inquires.
These conditions are called:
- simple unilateral neglect: where a person thinks 1/2 there body is missing
- somatopraphrenia: a limb belongs to someone else.
- asomatognosia: limbs drift in space, or fade from vision, so the individual may see
through the limb. (my sort..lol)
- anarchic limb: the limb appears to be acting autonomously and with purpose
- the alien hand: now get this…it feels like it belongs to someone else and is not their
own!!!
