Distant Memories

Original Creation Date: October 19th, 2005

I can say that this is the most technically complicated piece that I’ve done, or at least that’s how it felt when I was creating it. I can also say that there’s something oddly haunting, at least to me, about this image. Perhaps that’s why I linked it to the song I linked it to in the first place. I honestly can’t say what it is about this that gets me. All I know is that it gets me.

I don’t like the title despite it fitting pretty well. Don’t ask why because I don’t know the answer to that either. It’s like everything about this piece, even the title… even the description, escapes me. That’s a little weird. It’s even weirder that I can’t explain why. Maybe it’s the fact that the boy in the picture looks so secluded and so closed off from the world that he doesn’t even want to let ME in. Sad, isn’t it? But I love him.

General Specs:
Charcoal on 90 lb. paper (Canson)
16” x 20”

Inspired by Wind of Change: Scorpions

I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change
An August summer night
Soldiers passing by
Listening to the wind of change

The world is closing in
Did you ever think
That we could be so close, like brothers
The future’s in the air
I can feel it everywhere
Blowing with the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
in the wind of change

Walking down the street
Distant memories
Are buried in the past forever
I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
in the wind of change

The wind of change
Blows straight into the face of time
Like a stormwind that will ring the freedom bell
For peace of mind
Let your balalaika sing
What my guitar wants to say

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
in the wind of change

You are certainly very talented, and know what you are doing with a stick of charcoal – that, anyone could tell from a glance at your gallery. But there are a few pieces here that are particularly striking, this one included. I know how difficult it is to do a clean white background (i’m guessing you use compressed charcoal?) and i can certainly see how all those intricate details of the clothes and the subtle allusion to his face would challange any artist. Its his face that stands out the most to me, actually – i love its simplicity, its hidden detail, and how every time you look at it, you’re searching for… something. something that you really want to concentrate on, but you just can’t reach it yet.

You did a brilliant job with this. its beautiful.

Thank you very much for your comment. I did this piece long ago, but I can still remember how much I struggled with it. The textures were killer, the hair… I remember the hair was particularly challenging, and of course keeping charcoal work ‘clean’ is altogether a different story. It’s nice to know that someone out there knows just how difficult. :)

    Thanks again. It’s greatly appreciated.

This is beautiful work! It reminds me of a singer from a hairband of the 90’s. It is awesome in its detail and simplicity at the same time! Excellent job!
