Oh goody, now I can return the favor! Despite the fact your camera isn’t the most advanced, your 2 dragonfly photos show me that you have a great artistic eye. The red insect in this photo beautifully contrasts and complements the green leaf, and the composition with the action moving upwards in a diagonal path is pleasing to the eye as well as being a statement that my imagination can play with. Since a still photo shot is obviously not a moving picture, the photographer-artist has to find something in the composition that implies action. In this case you show implied movement up the leaf, and with the bending of the front right wing, there is a suggestion of wind. With a better camera and a bit more image processing, you could add more light to the dragonfly, although the light on the leaf brings out good details. In a way, the photo is more about the leaf than the dragonfly, but it’s up to you to help the viewer find YOUR story in the piece, and even if the leaf is item one and the dragonfly is item two, it still works. Some of the lighting on the dragonfly works, like on the thorax and the glint on one of the wings near the body. Remember as you get into this, that YOUR voice is all-important, YOUR eyes guide ours. But because you have a great artistic eye, I do encourage you to get a good camera and some photo processing software (photoshop is good). You need the tools. And no excuses about not being as good as the best of us.
wow ken, thanks for all the insight! hopefully i can save up for a better camera sooner than later, and i’ve already bought a photoshop tutorial book for the meantime:o). i definitely need to work on bringin out a story from pictures, and embed that into the title like you always do so cleverly. cheers!
