Christmas Project

Here is another project inspired by my brother’s request for photos. He wanted pictures of some of the veterans in the family to go on a Veterans Day-themed bulletin board. My dad saw the other picture that I worked on and was a little disappointed that he did not have any pictures of his father (my grandfather) in uniform, as he was also a WWII veteran.

Well, since times are tough, I decided to make my own Christmas presents and thought a project involving some of my grandpa’s pictures would be perfect for my dad. I did some emailing and found a few albums of pictures along with other memorabilia my grandpa saved.

I managed to find one of several pictures of my grandpa in recovery after being wounded. See, he figured an engineer had a longer life-span than say, a machine gunner. He didn’t count on being assigned to build a bridge in the middle of a battle-zone, or clearing land mines (which is how he got the crutches). My grandpa had the misfortune of finding an ersatz land-mine on German soil late in the war. Luckily for him, he was a bit of a pack-rat and had found some bayonets earlier and stuck them in his boot, which saved his foot. That got him a ticket home and the war ended a few months later.

When I was going through the photo albums I also found the original telegram informing his family of his injury. Both the telegram and photo had yellowed at differently and since they would both end up in the same image I neutralized the yellow-ness of both items. What I didn’t count on was the coincidental, albeit really cool, selective color look that I noticed when I added my grandpa’s purple heart ribbon to the project.
