Living in Texas, I have always been aware of the sounds of Mariachi music. It is something that is inherently rooted as part of the cultural fusion of our state. The musicians themselves are like ambassadors, bridging two very different worlds: Europe and the Americas. “Old school” and “new school.” Vivid strength and subtle sensuality. Harbingers of tradition and impresarios of the unique.
The mariachi band that inspired this particular series was full of lively and ceaselessly smiling individuals. They played in an almost empty taqueria to a group of unimpressed individuals. Yet, their passion lit up the room – and my memory. And, still intoxicated by their true musicianship, I captured them on canvas to help others remember their greatness.
