Hows this for a quote?

“If you make pictures, don’t speak, don’t write, don’t analyze yourself and don’t answer any questions.” – Robert Doisneau

A big ask, if you ask me, I know you weren’t asking, but I’m just saying in case you were going to ask.

LOL, is he talking about his own work here then or not Id have ask him? LOL, great quote

  • Carmen Cilliers replied

Well, its sort of simplifies everything doesnt it. I must say, you’d have to stick gaffer tape on my mouth and stick me in a straight jacket made from chicken wire if you expected me to comply… oh, and a cow prod to the brain if you don’t want me to analyze. Yip, dismally in old Rob Doisneaus eyes I have failed!

what if I just take snapshots?....

  • Carmen Cilliers replied

Yes – they’d make a great addition to your already gross portfolio alongside Colonscopy and twister with a bad ending.

That’s like putting duct tape on my mouth and tying my hands…I think not…

  • Carmen Cilliers replied

My sentiments exactly! I said ‘gaffer’ tape because people laugh when I say duck tape. I now am laughing too because I never realized it was ducT tape LOL

I think succesful art speaks for itself without supporting words and analysis. However, my art needs all he help it can get.

  • Carmen Cilliers replied

Agreed. Do you want to define successful art now?

I disagree you need all the help you can get Bob! You know thats not true my dear :)

hmmm …. i think there’s a point where it’s fun to self-analyse – but i agree with him in the sense that i prefer not to think about what i’m trying to ‘say’ with a picture til it’s been completed for a while, and i never prescribe a meaning to a picture that cancels out other people’s interpretations – sometimes they’re better than mine!

  • Carmen Cilliers replied

May I use that because when people ask me about my art it sounds pretty lame to say its “art for arts sake”. Lately I’ve been trying to back it up but it sounds fruity and even if there is a meaning for me, why should I have to divulge it to everyone, sometimes its quite personal and as you say, they should interpret it themselves as to how it relates to them or makes them feel.
