Thanks you guys! That was really quick! I am knackered now, this was a full days worth of painting, well not full, but 5 hours, you know what I mean. I wish I could upload a photo that is more true to life, it’s so big (the painting) that I have to stand quite far away, and lose detail in the flowers, dress etc… anyway – you ge the feel. I think it would make for nice cards or pics in a girls room or something. Well, I am off to get a RED!

Pretty bloody impressive if that’s only a few hours work. Like the parallel lines of the shoulderbones and cleavage. Reminds me of some illustrations in a book of Hans Christian Anderson fairytales I loved as a kid.

My only criticism is that the background seems a bit trite and uninspired – tossed off as if a hurried afterthought, perhaps – in comparison to the figure of the woman. I make that criticism in a spirit of contribution, and because looking at your other work, you strike me as being unusually talented…at your level, I think you’ve got to push yourself hard. Near enough is not good enough any longer. I would not be nit-picking and applying the critical magnifying glass like this with a lesser talent.

Hi Ross, Thanks for your comment, what suggestion would you have in regards to the background, there was a floaty patterned veil befor, waving behind her hair, but I painted over it. I should push myself, I got pretty tired near the end… and yea, you just got this plain background… would love to hear your thoughts, hope you won’t ask me to paint the rest of the wedding party LOL!

I wouldn’t intrude on your area in making a suggestion about an alternative background, Carmen. Please only take any notice of my comments on the background if they really speak to you and you find yourself nodding in agreement. I’m a lone perspective, and may well be bringing some sort of personal projection with me that others won’t relate to at all.

In very abstract terms, I guess I’d like to see something in the background that introduces an element of ambivalence – even just a hint that the bride is not 100% rhapsodic. And if she is, then I’d like to see something a bit more dramatic and emphatic than the current pretty background. Something that expresses real depth of emotion.

I know I’m being very demanding as a viewer, but as I said, I think your talent is worthy of such intense scrutiny. And please just discard my comments as irrelevant if they don’t strike a chord with you.

  • Cilliers

    Cilliers

Well you would have liked what was there before. I ended up painting over a whole nother painting which was quite dark and was going to be titled ‘the wedding party.’ You could see the frowning in-laws/parents, the bridesmaids, the crowd… it needed more work, her head went in to the background… then that become the foreground, I tried to keep elements of the background, I was going to title the painting “Against better judgement”. Then I thought, who would want this ominously hanging around their home… so I painted over the lot (blocking out all negative emotion…) and left it simple – however, look at her eyes. They say a whole lot more than the windswept hair…. also she was a smiling bride, but I overpainted the smile too and this is the end result! Love that your comment is so passionate. Where’s your gallery so we can talk LOL!!

  • Cilliers

    Cilliers

Now it sounds like a really depressing painting, it’s not, just a moment in time, so hope everyone still looks at it and enjoys it.

  • hotbeetees

Yes, I noted the eyes and mouth…perhaps that’s what prompted my background comments. Anyway, great stuff.

You have a more sensible approach to your work than I do – it’s probably true that people don’t generally buy pieces radiating negativity or ponderous messages about society’s shortcomings and political folly!

  • Cilliers

    Cilliers

Exactly! And I have read a few poems on depression, what’s the point of happiness, lost love etc, God, have been there, but “to wallow or not to wallow” that is my question… hence perhaps my colourful & in the moment art.
