Afternoon Shadows
Acrylic on Canvas. 150cm x 110.
At first glance this painting may just appear to be random lines of red paint and shapes…
What inspired me when I was looking at the blank canvas was the play of shadows as they fell onto the canvas from the nearby Jacaranda tree and the shade cast from my pergola. As I have mentioned before, inspiration can and is found in the mundane around us. The things we don’t notice.
Here is the final result, I hope you enjoy.

Belinda "Billy...
Wow Carmen, I love this….do another one, the interpretation is what I like the best. Doing a realistic painting is hard I know but taking something from your mind and making interpretative art is so much more interesting to me. Its great, I love it…what size is it?
Paul Gibbons
Great idea using the shadows, great work.
Cilliers
Hey Billy – it’s about 110×160cm – really big – at a guess, I can’t find my tape measure.

Cilliers
Enalu – thank you! You are right, it could look like a gate at the bottowm, I hadn’t thought of that before, that’s why this is such an interesting painting. So much of the feeling and texture is lost in this photo!

Great lines- almost has a Japanese feel to it for me, nice work.
Cilliers
... Not accepted into the minimalism group HA HA! Sorry – I had to laugh, I mean how much more minimalistic can you get when you depict your pergola and the shadows from an overhanging tree. These groups – god, add all the spam they send you and you gotta wonder!!!!
Gnat
how much more could you minimalise this? ooooooooooh a stick and a bolt in the plastic for the awning. yea, that minimal!
Cilliers
Yea, I’ll try that, thanks for your advice.
CateTownsend
I’m always noticing things in everything lol can’t even go to the loo without making out faces in the patterns of the tiles on the floor. It’s a good thing I’m not alone in this. Anyway I think this has a lovely feel to it, very nice work.
