Life's Gambles
A mixed media on canvas that unfolded over a period of 12 months and recently came together as this, rather unusual piece of work that incorporates a variety of mediums including collage, acrylic, gesso, sand, inks and guache… pretty much anything that I wanted.
I guess the theme remained one of experimentation and my attitude stayed playful and open to where the painting wanted to lead me. Most of my work, particularly my abstracts, are intuitive, there is no prior thought process or decision on what I want to create and I let the work take me on a path rather than me moulding it from the early stages. Perhaps this is why this painting unfolded as a game, and on a slightly more deeper level, is about the games we play and the gambles we take in our lives.

... oh, and one last point of interest. Some of you have already commented or favourited the previous versions of this painting, guess it goes to show how much our work can change in a short space of time. Pretty exciting to watch this journey as I enter my 3rd year of painting.
Have a happy day and thanks for looking : )

Carmen Cilliers replied
Thank you very much! And what a cool user name I like it : )
Look carefully at the painting and spot the cheater (as in person cheating not the animal)... kind of like in life you trust people and they do you over, little snakes! Then again, the snake is the symbol of transformation so, from every lesson we learn and grow.
Thanks for commenting.

Great colours Carmen and explanation to go with it. You have to pay an agent to promote you and we are poor artists so what we need is a mentor to promote us so we can get rid of some of our collection of paintings to lesson the pressure on our families when we give up the ghost! I think Picasso had over 900 odd drawings left to his family.

Thank GOD insurance didn’t work for you.
Your artwork in general, and this in particular for me, is wonderfully playful and capricious. I love your combination of media, and your colors are stunning.
You are very gifted and I’m glad you were able to recognize that to the extent of taking the plunge and giving up the daytime job. Awesome!
Carmen Cilliers replied
Thanks Billyboy – you are welcome anytime : )

Yes, life can be a game of snakes and ladders, can’t it. I really like this.
Carmen Cilliers replied
Yes, and I have been mulling over something to do with self preservation… maybe this is how this painting came to be. Thank you Blyth for commenting. x
