Rose

Rose

This is a VERY old drawing of mine done about my grandmother Rose back when I was still in my BIG EYES phase. (Although in fairness, Rose had very big brown eyes herself – quite lovely.) So I exaggerate!

After I had this framed, she was over one day and actually made the trip up my stairs into my studio to see this a few years before she died. She never knew what to make of my work so it was especially interesting to see her reaction to this.

C: “Grandma, I drew this about you and your sisters.”

R: “Hmm…I don’t understand it.”

C: “Well, you, of course, are at the center and your sisters are each of the roses around you. Because you have such different relationships with each, I tried to represent that. Anna, (who is deaf), is at the top left in the closed rose. The sisters that you fight with have a few extra thorns on them. Josephine is the fully opened one because you get along best with her. And YOU – well, you – have great mystery so that’s all I can show are your eyes and the darkness.”

R: “Cynthi, (long pause) show this to your aunties.”

I laughed to myself silently. And that was that. (I guess she liked it.)
I knew Rose would leave us with many untold stories and confessions, (and I was right).

You can see the original framed on the far left in this shot:

Love it ! ...and the story of your Grandma’s reaction – Wonderful! My mum is a “Grandma Rose “too and I think she would have reacted very similarly to your Grandma Rose! Beautiful work, as ever Cynthia! x

Rose was quite the mysterious woman. She left us with lots of questions that, with time, just don’t seem as important in knowing the answers to…

This is very sentimental for you, I like how you encorporated your conversations. Great idea and very creative! :)

  • Cynthia Lund T... replied

    Thank you Ming,

She and her sisters were an interesting group. It was wonderful and stressful to have 5 living sisters together in their 80’s/90’s. Three of them never married and lived together their entire adult lives. They all lived a few blocks from each other and there were always some sort of fuss going on. Funny and always interesting.

    Thanks again my dear…

No better story no more clear and beautiful can be told…
Tender and great … I dive into those eyes. Never had a grandma…these eyes are not exaggerated… they are simply big for you to be contained there… and your art and poetry is so big that just those huge pupils and sweetness can hold them into.
A gift to have met your art….a gift to share the conversation of the Roses.
