Ring Around the Rosy
This a version of “Ring Around the Rosy” I learned as a child :
Ring around the rosy,
A pocketful of posies.
ashes, ashes.
We all fall down!.
When our mother calls us,
We all jump up!
This song’s lyrics refer to the Bubonic Plague which raged through England in 1665. The “ring around the rosy” refers to one of the first skins symptoms of the disease. “A pocketful of posy” refers to the fact that caregivers who actually dared to take care of the sick would often fill their pockets with flowers to overcome the stench of the dead and dying. “Ashes…we all fall down” is reminiscent of going back to dust when we die.

this is absolutely beautiful, Chuck. We used to grow “Bee Balm”...at least I think that is what this flower is…in Michigan and it attracted lots of hummers.
I never knew the basis of the song…funny that a child’s song has such morbid origins.

Yes it is “Bee Balm” and it does attract them, Mary-Ann; Why can’t you grow it there? It was a lot of fun sitting in my patio and shooting them this summer…

Pueblo West has a very arid climate…less than 12 inches of rain a year. Monarda is not one of the plants that grows here without irrigation. Water is at such a premium here we have a gravel yard, and don’t grow anything that needs to be watered.

Thanks Cee, They are a lot of fun to shoot as they circle round and round the bee balm flowers. I only planted one plant this year, next year I will plant a few more..
