That morning was no ordinary morning. It rained the day before, and the frosty night that followed covered everything with a thin icy coat. With the first rays of the autumnal sunshine the frost didn’t even have time to melt: the ice sublimed straight into a lingering cold mist which hung between the copper-coloured beeches.
