Melting ice is breaking up these reflections in the Loch of the Lowes, Scotland. The large freshwater loch has a diverse aquatic flora, fringed by areas of fen, reedbeds and semi-natural woodland. The loch and the surrounding area are designated as a wildlife reserve which covers 98 hectares, run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. The Loch of the Lowes visitor centre is one of only three visitor centres operated by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the other two being at Montrose Basin and Falls of Clyde. The reserve land was purchased by the trust in 1969, shortly before the first ospreys started breeding at the site. From early April to late August, a pair of breeding ospreys nest close to the observation hides.
