The Verandah - acrylic on canvas

Acrylic/Gouache on Canvas
simple colours…repetition…light and shade…
my first really good painting. this painting changed my life…
my homage to Edward Hopper, particularly 1960 painting People in the Sun (National Museum of American Art Washington DC), the windows of ‘Summer Evening’ 1947, and ‘Summertime’ 1943. Now I just have to produce amazing work for the next 50 years or so and I may be able to hold a candle to the man as an artist…just gotta find me a subservient partner to cook and clean while I get famous…mmmm
the actual house is on the ocean front at Currumbin Beach , Queensland.

Hi Christina – saw this painting in the PiMT group. It is really fabulous. Have you found that subservient partner yet???? Mine gave up on trying to get fed and started doing the cooking quite a few years ago, but getting him to do the cleaning part is much more difficult!!!! I am still waiting for the ‘famous’ bit to happen!!!!

  • ChristineBetts replied

hehehehe… i think men are the only ones who get slaves…lol… I’d happily settle for ‘rich’ instead of famous:)
    thanks for your lovely comment:)

Hey Christine, fine painting. Love the light, the composition with the railing angling just off horizontal. Love the freshness of your approach. What size is this piece? Cheers! tps

  • ChristineBetts replied

thanks so much. It is 75cm x 45 cm (larger with the frame) so larger than I am working at the moment

You have discovered in your marshmallow… almost goopy…. whites a way that Hopper puddled emotion in palette and created a reality without borders. His moods allowed carefully selected interiors and exteriors to permeate the membranes that surround his ‘real’ things so that his images were more like chords than a group aof single notes. And yet, he also had walls of containment as you have here in the solid blue sky which made it clear that subjective moments exist within real … even harsh… constraints.

It’s such a curious way to imagine… thanks for letting me do it… again.

  • ChristineBetts replied

I just love your comments!! thankyou for taking the time:) I am not so great with words…as Hopper said “If I could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint”.
