Just wondering when something falls into the art category.
Is it when someone says it is?
Is it when someone thinks its is?
Does it need to have value?
Does it need an explaination?
When it is the cause of controversy?
When it evokes emotion or not?
Just trying to figure out what art really is – for me it is a personal expression of who i am.

I agree with you. My art must reflect who I am.

My art reflects my past my present and my future…my writtings reflect emotion of all types because i am human and i feel a multitude of emotion. my art also reflects my emotions as well as my interests…sometimes my pieces have a statement sometimes my art is just me expierimenting….and others my art is my way of healing.

Yikes. You are almost getting into a branch of philosophy that eventually goes up its own alimentary canal on a hunt for the Yeti.
The technical definition is pretty much bound up with the notion of culture, the human condition and fucntionality.
Technically graphics cannot be what athropologists would describe as ‘art’ as it is quite clearly functional (it has a practical purpose), some would argue that photography isn’t art as it is a technical record bereft of th e’human condition’ aspect (which I think is flawed in so many ways.
Personally, I see it all as bound up in what teh viewer sees, thinks and feels. There is no authorative opinion (just some handy definitions for academics) just as no-one can win the argument aout what the best chocolate is.
My stuff is pretty much driven by a futile attemot to convey personal emotion. I do graphics stuff too now and again to convery messages. I’m not much of an existentialist most of teh time though.

Damn this bipolar wittering. When I started typing ‘Butterflies’ post wasn’t there after I posted it beat me to it in a fraction of the words and twice as clear!

I think you’re right, it’s an expression of who you are, no one should be able to jidge what art is because everyone has different opinions. a toddler drawing a scribble picture is art for them, it doesnt have to be a masterpiece!
