I believe photography is a form of visual poetry, with the power to transport us through time, opening windows to special fleeting moments, which have long since passed. As you browse my portfolio, I hope that my photographs allow you to escape through these windows, and enjoy the special places and moments that I had been privileged to experience

Love it Chris. I’ve been to Liffey and you’ve recorded it beautifully here, making great use of the format. Perfect exposure, and conditions were clearly good to achieve the dynamic range you have with Velvia. If you don’t mind me asking what type of scanner do you use for your films? It looks like it is getting a lot out of the film (from what I can see in the preview).
    Best,
    Brett

  • Thanks Brett :-) All my transparencies are scanned with an Imacon Flextight 484 scanner, which does an excellent job of extracting details from bright highlights and deep shadows. On this occasion however, even with the beautiful soft light of an overcast afternoon, the 4 stop dynamic range of Velvia 50 could not retain detail throughout the shadows and highlights. Had I exposed for the brightest highlights, the rest of the scene would have been underexposed. On the other hand, if I had exposed for the overall scene, the brightest highlights in the water would be overexposed. In the end, I took two shots – one for the brightest highlights in the water and one for the overall scene.
The transparencies where then scanned, with the highlights of the shot exposed for the water being blended into the shot exposed for the overall scene. This is a great technique, which, used gently can help extend the dynamic range of a beautiful film.

Aha. This V700 owner is rather envious of your Imacon. Although for the money they do an outstanding job. Keep doing what you’re doing mate, I’m loving it, we Velvia nuts need to stick together more then ever at the moment too. This looks so much nicer than the typical ghastly HDR effort in this scenario. Top effort Chris, and feel free to drop in for coffee next time you’re in the Derwent Valley.
    Cheers,
    Brett
