Here are a couple of cubs about 50-60 ft up in a tree in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain National Park. They were taking a late morning nap while mom alertly snoozed(yes I know a somewhat contradicting turn of words) below. My wife and I were riding our bikes to avoid the “bear jams” that occur in this part of the park. These two were not visible from the road. They were about 100 yards into the woods.

Taken with a Canon 50D, 100-400 L @400mm f5.6 ISO 800

Hi, my name is Chris Snyder and I reside in beautiful Western North Carolina, USA. I have been a swim coach since 1990 and have been selling my photography since 2006. My wife and I are avid mountain bikers and also are very involved in animal rescue. We always have a menagerie of some size and makeup. Most of my images are of nature whether wildlife or landscapes. I hope you enjoy.

Outstanding capture. I need to get that lens. I love my 300 but I would love the versatility of the zoom. Do you live close to the park? I got to go last year and just love the area. Cades cove is amazing.

  • Thanks John. The 100-400 is a great lens. It is one of my most used lenses for sure.

I live about 75 minutes from the Cataloochee Valley part of the park where you usually have a good chance to see elk. Cades Cove is a 2.5-3 hour drive depending on who you get behind in the park.

Sweet capture- great find. They look so comfy and at home up there- though how they are staying up I have no idea! Hope mum wasn’t too upset at their becoming models!

  • Thanks so much K. They had a pretty large crook in the tree to hang out in. I have some pictures of Mum coming soon.

This for sure would have caused a bear jam had it been visible from the road. Nicely spotted!

  • Thanks Anthony. Great shots on your site.
