Nathan's The Original Since 1916 in Coney Island by

Nathan’s Famous, the original All American Hot Dog Emporium, Shot with a Canon 5D MKII on Surf Avenue, Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City.

~ Each Fourth of July a group of 20 steely-eyed individuals line up behind a 30-foot table at Nathan’s flagship restaurant on Surf Avenue in Coney Island to begin the world hot dog eating championship. At 12 Noon, crushed by fans and media, the competitors begin the historic 10-minute contest. According to archives, the Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest was first held in 1916, the year Nathan’s opened on Surf Avenue. The contest has been held each year since then, except in 1941, when it was canceled as a protest to the war in Europe, and in 1971, when it was canceled as a protest to civil unrest and the reign of free love.~

Photography has been an obsession since I was 13 years old and went off to Italy clutching my mother’s 1940s roll film camera. I’ve been fooling with computers since I bought an Amiga 1000 back in 1985. My first chunky pixelized images were digitized into that machine using a black and white CCTV camera. At last, with today’s software and hardware I feel that I can create the images I see in my mind’s eye. Visit my website at www.PixielatedPixels.com

Its great to see things like this still around. Great color work.

  • Hi Rodney, good to see you stopped by. Not having been out to Coney Island for almost a year I was shocked to see how much of the old place has, indeed, gone. All the boardwalk bars and cafes have now closed or completely disappeared, replaced with a few new buildings including a big new Nathan’s on the boardwalk. I have been visiting, camera in hand, once or twice a year for at least ten years now so have records of much of it. Maybe of some historical value one day??? But yes at least the original Nathan’s is still standing and doesn’t seem to about to vanish any time soon.
