The most recognized landmark of Midhurst is the Cowdray Ruins – the former home of the Montague family. Built in 1542, it was then largely destroyed by fire in 1793. Cowdray is a Historic Tudor House set in Midhurst, West Sussex. Cowdray is one of England’s most important early Tudor houses. This visitor attraction was visited by Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry VIII. Its magnificent ruins are set in the stunning landscape of Cowdray Park, in the heart of the South Downs. Cowdray plays host to special events throughout the season, including outdoor theatre and period re-enactments. Cowdray is managed by the Cowdray Heritage Trust which was set up by the current Viscount Cowdray to secure a future for the Cowdray Ruins.
