Point Arena Light is a lighthouse on a narrow peninsula in Mendocino County, north of San Francisco, California, United States.
In 1906, the San Francisco earthquake struck the original Light Station and damaged it so severely that it had to be demolished. 18 months later the new lighthouse began operation. It has withstood all earthquakes and its light has continued to provide constant service since 1908.
Point Arena Light is the tallest light station on the Pacific Coast. Views from the Point Arena Lighthouse tower offer a dramatic perspective on this spectacular part of California’s coast. It is one of the best spots along the northern California coastline to watch gray whales – just not the day when I was there.
