Nine Mile Canyon, Utah - one of America's most endangered places

Utah has been blessed with a diversity of unusual rock formations and canyons unequalled anywhere in the world. One of them, a gorgeous canyon named Nine Mile Canyon, located 20 miles southeast of Price, UT is nicknamed “the world’s longest art gallery,” famous for its thousands of ancient images or petroglyphs that go back in time to the mysterious disappearance of a Native American culture.

Nine Mile Canyon is approximately five times longer than its name indicates and full of cliffs, unique tilted rocks and vegetation, old homesteads, working ranches, prehistoric Fremont Indian ruins, petroglyphs, pictographs, ancient Indian writings, and a lot of beautiful scenery, in addition to the most spectacular largest concentration of ancient Indian rock art in North America. It is a destination for archeologists from all over the world and for tourists alike. All you need is a love for beautiful scenery and invigorating outdoor activity to enjoy this remote, hostile, unblemished and rough southern Utah wilderness.

At the same time Nine Mile Canyon is an outdoor museum that is being destroyed. You can still find standing rock art towers from thousands of years ago that withstood the test of time, but really aren’t going to withstand the pressures of natural gas development. Jim Lindsay, the guide at Utah’s Natural History Museum points out that “we only have maybe 15, 20 years before they could be so damaged that it would be difficult to see any of them. The public debate over the extraction of natural gas in the middle of a historic landmark is expected to continue for years to come.”
