The Whippet - Pure Joy

Despite their slender frame, the Whippet, once called the “poor man’s racehorse”, is an incredibly fast dog, the ultimate racer. Whippets take off like a shot, achieve their maximum speed of ~35-40 mph in a fraction of a second, and can get up to 40 miles per hour for short distances. They are the fastest known dog breed, even faster than their larger ancestor, the Greyhound.

Although Whippets are a sporting breed and first class athletes, they are well-mannered, loving, gentle and devoted house pets who enjoy being couch potatoes, and they are superb animal-assisted therapy dogs. They are delicate, sensitive pooches, need lots of positive feedback, and should be given plenty of opportunities to show off their natural talents!

With his streamlined, graceful physique, long legs, and alert expression, the Whippet is an irresistible, beautiful dog, and, despite their fragile look, a very healthy breed. Whippet dogs are fun and easy, and when they are truly happy you will see it in their magnetic winning “smile”.
