This lion (Panthera leo leo) really was the master of all he surveyed. He had perched himself upon a large rock outcrop within his territory in the Serengeti, Tanzania. He was king and he knew it!
Taken with Canon 40D and 50-500mm Sigma lens
The lion is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list. The main threats to lions are indiscriminate killing (primarily as a result of retaliatory or pre-emptive killing to protect life and livestock) and prey base depletion. Habitat loss and conversion has led to a number of populations becoming small and isolated (Bauer 2008).
