Artist's Description

The early twentieth century was characterized by rising tensions and increased militarism. It all came to a head on the 28th of June, 1914, with the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a group of Serbian nationalists known as the Black Hand. This isolated act sparked the powder keg that Europe had become, starting the first World War.
The fact that one murder over local politics could entangle the entire planet was an early hint at the spiderweb of connections we would eventually called ‘globalization.’ As chaos theory tells us, a small event on one side of the globe can have massive ramifications elsewhere.
