Don't call me a hero

Don’t call me a hero
It just insults all those who tried
To give their all & win
But then just lost & died

I’ve born the name of “hero”
I’ve worn it like a scar
But like so many headlines
It really goes too far

I’ve stood in front the gates of hell
The pain, the loss, the gore
I stood & did what I must do
And then could do no more

If I am all that blasted good,
Why do I feel so bad?
Why could not I give a chance to those
Who’ve lost all that they had?

Artist's Description

My state has just undergone a firestorm with severe loss of life. Those people who fought the fire & saved many have been labelled as heroes. However I noticed that they get angry when called a “hero” & wondered why- this poem is my interpretation of their response mixed with my experience in disaster & emergencies
