Hazy History

In the long hazy drowse
of thick afternoon heat,
in the lull and lolling
stretch of siesta,
those languid hours
in the chalk dry classrooms
of history and windows,
the drone of lecture,
more somnolent than opium,
caressed the stifled yawn
of children driven drowsy by ages.

How many Henrys fell
before the slight catching sleep
dwindled reality
into amorphic dreams
beneath the glistered sun
and a sky dabbed with vapour.

I absolutely adore this one…so many great lines…and so evocative of the mood…I started yawning …lol…wonderful…

“beneath the glistered sun "…love that ….

Ah yes. I remember when Southern classrooms were not air conditioned.
