Abandonment

A poem is never finished, only abandoned.
Paul Valery

Before, there were light words
that came like air, like breath
and angels fell from grace
to bless the holy page

Now a stuttering nerve
here above the belly
and there below the heart
somehow detached from me

Like the weight of duty
significant and round
It urges me to write
other than the easy

I cannot tip the trick.
conjure with dancing hands
to dazzle and delight.
I have done with all that

I wait as if for tides
my fingers feathering
with difficult friction
between the keys and locks

At the centre of me
where every skyward voice
bursts forth with prayers and rhyme
I lisp an edge of sound

With sweat and gestation
in blood and genesis.
the flesh becomes the word
abandoned to the world
