The Writer's Butterfly

THE WRITER’S BUTTERFLY

Ideas creep, caterpillarish,
Across the twigs of mind,
Assimilating nourishment
With every minute step
Until,
Clustered and fashioned to fit
A receptive nano-nook,
A cunning virtual crevice,
They form a chrysalis
To wait for summer.

When the season’s right
A glistening creature emerges
Stretching its wings,
Trembling on the cusp of critical acclaim
Until,
groomed and strengthened
It bravely flutters forth
To meet its destiny.

Artist's Description

Written for a very dear friend who had just won a one-year “writer in residence” grant.
The gestation of ideas and their coming together to form the image for the page and the eventual publication of the work when it ‘bravely flutters forth to meet its destiny’ is at the heart of this poem.

A light-hearted approach, but heavy on the metaphor.
