Design studios...

Hey all,
I had a thought today. I got offered a graphic designer job a few weeks back for $45,000 + super at a creative design studio in Brisbane. Then I saw an ad for a graphic designer for a government agency for about $60,000 (same level). I also saw a similar salary package for a position advertised at a construction agency in-house studio. For the govt agencies the templates and styles are set, you don’t do a lot of creative thinking and collaboration/input… Whereas a lot of that happens in a creative graphic design studio….. Yet the pay is so much less! I think it’s disgraceful that being a creative and artistic individual is so undervalued. Shouldn’t you get paid more if you are creative and less if you’re purely working from existing templates and doing finished artwork/production?

What do you guys think?

Hi chOcOlateBubble, I agree with you 100%, it really sucks how they work things like that, but what can we do about it?, not a lot really.

The tighter the brief, the higher the voice . . . oops! meant to say, the harder it is to be creative. Restrictions are challenges to over come, and it’s good to see some employers appreciate that.

    Follow your intuition.

Better to be happy but with less pay, than miserably wealthy . . . I’m speaking theoretically here of course, since (with 20 years graphic design behind me) I’ve never had the problem of boundless wealth ;-)

I can’t believe that there is such a huge difference in the pay.. I would definitely go for the more creative of the jobs though. You will learn more and it would be so much more fulfilling in the long run.
Well done on the offer though!
