Sanyasin = Truth and wisdom seekers. For thousands of years, people in India have been inspired to renounce all worldly possessions in the search for truth and wisdom.

They go on a walking pilgrimage. Dissimilar to today’s backpackers, they have no set journey plan or timetable deadlines. From village to town to city, they are fed and sheltered by the kindness of strangers.

I painted this image because I met these people often in my travels through the country. I was constantly amazed at how their silent presence instantly attracted kindness from young and old, rich and poor, native and foreign people alike. It reminded me that we all share the same journey, though our life paths can be so very different. The journey to experience and know love and wisdom is the golden thread that connects us all.
