Meet Felix, seeking asylum from the oppressive regime in Zimbabwe.
He’s a thoroughly personable fellow, making the best of hard times. Now he teaches music to people in his community.
I was invited to meet and photograph Felix by a journalist friend. We did a few shots with different moods. This is the final, and my favourite one. Once I had the technical details to my liking, I asked him how to play the drum, and he made this gesture with his hands. That’s it, I thought, and asked him to do it again, giving me the pose you see here.
The story closes with him with an optimistic view to the future. There are many people in the world facing huge burdens, but I can’t personally think of each. So today my best wishes are for Felix.
I haven’t posted any piccies for a long while. It marks for me a milestone from my old days on the photoblog where I almost never did portraits or used flash. Looking at this now, I can see how I’ve travelled.
No photoshop edits.

Great to see you here, Rod. And to see this handsome chap from Zimbabwe. Good catchlights.
