Seven Sisters in the evening sunshine
The Seven Sisters are a series of chalk cliffs that stretch between Birling Gap and Cuckmere Haven, under care of the National Trust. The chalk cliffs are continuously eroded by the English Channel and form part of the South Downs in East Sussex, between the towns of Seaford and Eastbourne and within the Seven Sisters Country Park. The cliffs have been occasionally used in film and television as a stand-in for the more famous white cliffs of Dover, most famously featuring at the beginning of the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. In the foreground are the Coastguard Cottages, first built in 1818 by the Navy, being the officer’s house of the Customs and Excise watch. In 1840, they became a Coastguard station watching over the busy shipping in the Channel. World War II saw them occupied by the Army with Cuckmere Haven being heavily fortified against the potential of German assault forces landing there. Cuckmere came under frequent attack by bombers and fighter planes, and many soldiers lost their lives whilst defending the shoreline.
I have been fortunate to sell a “matted print” of this image to a mystery buyer through the Redbubble site. Thank you to the buyer, whoever you are

Robert Hardy
Lovely light, grat image, I seem to remember this as the cottage they dreamed of in the film Atonement.
ChelseaBlue replied
You are correct Rob, with its whitewashed walls and cliff-top views of the beach, the tiny coastguard cottage at Cuckmere Haven is central to the emotionally wrought plot of Atonement. Soldier Robbie Turner returns time and again to his photograph of this idyllic dwelling, drawing from it the strength to survive the Second World War in the hope of one day living there with his love, Cecilia Tallis.

Hi Chelseablue
I think we must have taken our photos within about 50metres of each other.
Yours is slightly to the right from mine. I was on the path level with the gorse bushes
ChelseaBlue replied
It’s a popular place to take photographs from, mine was taken just after a sunset, hence the very orangey glow on the cliffs
poupoune

New to your site. This is such an impressive image. Can understand it may have been a “stand in” for the Dover Cliffs – but there is certainly no “stand in” element about this shot! It is “lead”.
