Lighthouse, Beachy Head
Beachy Head is on the coast of Eastbourne, East Sussex
In 1902 the lighthouse was brought into service, sited about 165 metres from the base of the cliffs. It took two years to complete and involved building a coffer-dam and a cableway from the top of the cliffs to carry materials down to the site. 3,660 tons of Cornish granite were used in the construction of the tower. Beachy Head lighthouse was automated and demanned in June 1983.
Since the 1600s Beachy Head has been notorious as a location for people to attempt suicide, estimated at 20 each year, so nearby is a special telephone box with a direct line to the Samaritans. In 2006 there were only seven fatalities, a marked decrease, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency attributed the reduction to the work of the Chaplaincy Patrol Team and good coverage of services by local media.
The Countryside Commission also designated the white chalk cliffs between Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters and Seaford Head as the first ever stretch of Heritage Coastline – a stretch of coastline which is of particular natural beauty or importance and is managed to preserve this largely undeveloped beauty
Shot taken with a Olympus Camedia D-545 Zoom point and shoot camera

Fantastic shot! It looks as if this lighthouse gets completely surrounded by water. When it was manned, I bet it was an exciting place to be with all of the waves hitting it, Now wouldn’t that be a picture.

Hi dolphindancer, thanks for your comments, but I wouldn’t be that brave to stand where I was during a “force 10” when the tide is fully in and the waves are breaking, pheww !

Terrific photo and a keeper for sure. I remember in our younger days we used to drive down to Eastbourne from our home in Surrey and then head on up to Beachy Head where we used to lie face down on the very edge, smoking furiously (we did in those days!! LOL) and flicking the butts over the edge. We would have been in our late teens I suppose! Wonderful to have those memories rekindled. Peter

An excellent and original view of the ligthouse. It looks so smallagainst the cliffs, yet the bright red and white markings make it stand out and draw the eye towards it. Many years ago I wanted to be a lighthouse keeper then, as you say, they were automated and that career path was closed. :( Just think of the photos you could get from the top of the lighthouse when the wind blows a gale and the waves are crashing all around…
ChelseaBlue replied
Wouldn’t it be fantastic to be inside during a “force ten”. what an experience that would be, thanks for your comments

Wonderful shot that brings back many memories from my youth. As late teenagers, who should have known better, we used to lie face down right on the very edge of the cliff and proceed to flick our cigarette butts down to see if we could spot them hitting the rocks below!! (I hadn’t thought of those times until seeing this photo!!) A great piece of work. Best wishes, Peter

Very impressive. The lighthouse looks so small in this shot. The cliffs must be huge or is it just the right perspective?
ChelseaBlue replied
The lighthouse looks small because the cliffs are nearly 600 feet high at the highest point. The area is spectacular and Eastbourne people are very proud of it, thank you for commenting

Great scenery ChealseaBlue … hows the weather over there with you today … Its raining here today, windy too, the house feels cold although we continue to burn the oil burner to heat the radiators throughout the house. Kids are in their bedrooms watching tv and perhaps playing with their computer games or simply listening to music through their computers. Me, I have a lot of work to do and I mean a lot (for school), but on days like this, I simply couldn’t be bothered. I took the kids to the local supermarket and had lunch, let them pick five dvd’s so that they would have some different entertainment throughout the day. Mum, the wife, shes at work … yip at work nursing some sickly folk, God bless them, and its Saturday … the day we usually spend out and about doing family/quality time with one another. Dad phoned to see if all is ok and says mum is in bed feeling poorly with a possible chest infection. I hope shes ok … will travel down to their house later today and bring something to cheer them up. Oh what a day, the rain has eased a little and there is a temporary break in the grey skyline. I am peering out the front window of our family room and accross the meadow, the trees are almost bare, skeleton like with little evidence of wildlife. I must get the overcoat on and brave the weather to hang those wildbird delights on the tree in the garden. The birds always look forward to that and it gives the kids and I great pleasure to watch the various little songsters coming to visit for a well needed feed. I would like to take some pictures around and about the local countryside today but don’t think it would be a great idea as I dont wish to get a soaking especally with all sorts of flu’s lurking (oink oink) and some people that we know have caught it already but thankfully are well on their way to a full recovery. Christmas aint that far away and the shops are full of beautiful gifts for all, just last evening I walked around the Christmas festive marketplace outside City Hall in Belfast, to kill a couple of hours, while my wife and kids attended the Kings Hall Children in Need event which was also televised. The stalls are made up of produce from all around the world with the good folk from each country selling their wares. The smells and sights are brilliant, I forgot to bring my camera and was so pissed at that, but I will return to capture these delights and to share here in the next weeks. I had to sample a tasty burger and believe me it was the best burger that I have tasted to date and was well worth the extortonate price that I payed for it … bought some tarts and sat with a large hot drinking chocolate under the big wheel turning and illuminated in all is glory … what a sight.
Stopped for a chat with an ex-pupil of mine in the local mobile phone shop and then dandered around Victoria Square and that was also very enjoyable as the Christmas decorations were in situ. It was then I realised that my phone would help capture that moment with its integral camera so I snapped up a few shots to show my wife and kids later in the evening. I will try and upload some of these pics on RB later for you all to see. I didn’t have the time to walk back around to the marketplace to snap up the sights there and anyway I would rather wait for another excuse to revisit to sample some more of the gastronomic delights and perhaps some of that foreign beer …. I guess wifey will have to drive on that particular occasion LOL :-) . On the road home I could see the night sky light up with fireworks and the Belfast lough reflected its many colours as I drove toward home to Carrickfergus. I arrived at the harbour area in the town and the fireworks were still lighting up the sky, so I sat in my car and watched the remainder of the display along with the other townfolk before heading the extra two miles northwest for home. Right, thats about enough time wasted here and I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this snippit of my day here in paradise … mums just phoned and shes feeling better and wants to see the kids …. so I will pack them up and take them down for an hour or so to see Nan and Granda …. be good and happy RB’ing!

Thanks for your kind comments Dave, the weather over here is also rubbish and I certainly wouldn’t venture up to “The Head” today with the windy conditions as they are. Enjoyed reading your piece and best regards to you all

Thanks Marie, especially pleasing as my image gained an equal amount of votes as first place, but hey, there can only be one winner

The lighthouse appears dwarfed by the cliff which gives a good idea of it’s height. A beautiful spot to have such a sad history.
