This was a candid shot taken in the plaza beside Notre Dame, Paris.
I wanted the shot to include the two homeless men surrounded by the pigeons, so I decided to pull the framing out to make the shot look as busy as possible.
I used a fast shutter speed to prevent any flying/fast moving pigeons from obscuring the shot.
This does look busy and yet, most appealing. Somehow you pull the people and pigeons together into one great b/w. Many possible stories and emotional content here, too. Nicely done.
I thought it was quite an amazing image to see these men, down and out in the world, allowing themselves to be overwhelmed by the pigeons. When I was watching them I couldn’t tell if they were inviting the pigeons or whether they had just resigned themselves to their (potentially unwelcomed) company.
I’m not sure whether this image could do with a bit of cropping to get rid of some of the space at the top of the picture. I might do some experimenting and post the result if I can improve upon it.
